Following the success of their first two home console units, the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) and the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES)--which combined sold more than 100 million units worldwide--Nintendo first announced the "Ultra 64" in 1994. Following the initial announcement, however, the system saw considerable delays and underwent a name change. It eventually would be first released two years later as the Nintendo 64.

When the Nintendo 64 released, it only had two launch titles. Super Mario 64 and Pilot Wings 64. Must have title was obviously Mario 64, then came another best seller, Mario Kart 64. Followed by Goldeneye 007 (sleeper), Star Fox 64 and Majoras Mask.
